Are there age Limits?

There’s no minimum age to take flight lessons with an instructor in a dual-controlled aircraft.

However, we recommend not starting until 14 years old, depending on the student’s size and maturity.

You can begin learning the basics and even log flight time toward a future license.

What’s the minimum age to get a pilot license in the U.S.?

  • Student Pilot Certificate age 16 (14 for gliders and balloons)

  • Private Pilot License (PPL) - age 17

  • Recreational Pilot License - age 17

  • Commercial Pilot License - age 18

  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) age 18

  • Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) age 23 (21 with Restricted ATP)

Is there a maximum age limit to fly? No. There is no upper age limit to fly as a Private or Recreational Pilot. However, commercial airline pilots must retire by age 65.

Can older adults learn to fly? Absolutely!

Many people begin flight training in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. As long as you can pass the required medical exam, it’s never too late to start flying.
